If only microsoft stuck some sort of roadmap past win2000 and just continued to make it faster and smaller, maybe they would still have chance. I'm sure that MacOS has some MS Guys drooling, so they can't help but add more visual crud. They've already lost that market to various Linux Distros, but if they had done exactly what you're talking about they never would have given Linux a niche to enter into the desktop market.
